Abstract

This study examines the role of international trade barriers in shaping the performance of India’s aquaculture industry, with particular attention to Andhra Pradesh. Aquaculture has become an important source of export earnings, employment and rural income in India, while Andhra Pradesh occupies a major position in shrimp production and seafood exports. The study focuses on tariffs and non-tariff measures, including sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, quality standards, traceability rules and market-access conditions in major importing countries. It analyses how these barriers can influence export prices, quantities, production decisions, farm profitability and the competitiveness of Indian seafood. The study uses secondary information from official Indian sources, including the Marine Products Export Development Authority, Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Reserve Bank of India, together with international trade information where appropriate. The analysis indicates that the effect of trade barriers is not limited to exporters: changes in foreign market access can pass through the seafood value chain to processors, traders, feed suppliers and aquaculture farmers. Andhra Pradesh is particularly exposed because of its concentration in shrimp production and export-oriented aquaculture. The paper argues that improving product quality, traceability, disease management, processing capacity, market diversification and trade negotiation can reduce vulnerability to external trade shocks. The study concludes that a combination of export competitiveness and farmer-level resilience is necessary for sustainable growth of the aquaculture industry.
